Buhle Hlatshwayo

Born in Radebe (Thokoza), Katlehong on the East Rand of Johannesburg on 10 October 1989 as the second of five children. At the age of 8, he moved to Johannesburg with his grandmother (who raised him and his uncle). They resided at a women's shelter called Usindiso. Later, Buhleand his uncle were moved to a children's home for boys, Rhema Paradise Children's Home. They were introduced to different sporting activities, as well as art classes.

Buhle is a locally based artist who has come up through the ranks of the Little Artist's School's project.  The project is an art-based non-profit organization based at Barnato park High School in Berea, Johannesburg. It was founded by Edward Selematsela together with Dulcie Robinson of the watercolour society of South Africa and a few volunteer teachers.

Buhle's interest and curiosity in the visual arts began in 1997 when he was given the opportunity to choose an activity to participate in, at the children's home.  There was a variety of activities to choose from and he strongly leaned towards the Little Artist's School project.

  

Seeking to develop his skills further, Buhle enroled in a part-time course at Artist Proof Studio, an institution specializing in acrylic, oil pastels and printmaking.  He is also a full-time member of the biggest outdoor art exhibition, "Artist's under the Sun", where he exhibits his work every first weekend of each month at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg.

"We all start the race at the same starting line, but we don't all end at the same finishing point. We all go to Jo'burg searching for a better life but not all of us benefit from the City of Gold. Hence, most people drown when they get to Jo'burg and they tend to forget their roots. We don't look at our past and stick to it, but we look at our past in order to have a better understanding of the future."
