Mbongeni Fakudze
Mbongeni Fakudze was born in Mbabane on April 16, 1982. He studied at Sifundzani Primary School and Waterford Kamhlaba (UWCSA) until Form 5, then completed a Fine Arts correspondence course through the University of South Africa, Pretoria. He later attended the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria for Fine Arts. Afterward, he returned to Swaziland, registered a small animation company, then moved to Johannesburg to study 3D animation. After receiving his certification, he returned to Swaziland to focus on visual art.
Mbongeni discovered his passion for art at Waterford, influenced by Surrealist artists like Dali and Magritte. Initially focused on painting, he soon explored digital art and animation, describing animation as the natural progression from still art to moving objects. His animation work is artistic and abstract, not commercial. Recently, he has become interested in multimedia performances combining video, photographs, graphic art, and live
performance. He also writes poetry, viewing it as closely connected to his visual art.
In 2004, after winning the Best Figure Drawing Award at TUT, Mbongeni was invited by SABC to create a portrait for the program “All You Need Is Love,” aired on SABC 1. Another career highlight occurred in 2010 when he won the Best Public Sculpture competition by the Matsapha Town Board; his sculpture now stands as a historical monument in the town board gardens.
